When you think of the upcoming eclipse, if your focus is on *yourself*, you’ve missed the point.
I wasn’t going to publicly say anything about this celestial event and its (highly predictable) corresponding “prophecies”, and I certainly don’t speak in response to every current event.
I also have people that I love and respect who think a variety of things about this event, and I want to be careful here not to be dismissive or demeaning.
Each person is free to make their own observations and speculations.
However, what is problematic enough to prompt me to issue an exhortation is the self-centric nature of the “prophecy” and the response to it.
If a celestial event causes your gaze to turn inward instead of upward, then it isn’t the Creator of the Cosmos that you’re currently worshipping.
The Heavens declare the glory of GOD, not of your ability to predict the future.
An eclipse is an incredible celestial event orchestrated by the One who spoke the world into existence and who holds it all together by the Word of His power.
It should cause you to excitedly prepare to witness the wondrous power of your Creator.
Aside from the fact that what is being called “prophecy” in this event is based upon poor hermeneutics (the “sign of Jonah” was a reference to Christ’s burial and resurrection), the primary issue is that your gaze should be on the heavens.
Aside from the fact that this is yet another event in a long line of events (many of them celestial) that have been “prophesied” as the end of the world, the primary issue is that your gaze should be on the heavens.
Aside from the fact that the odds of an eclipse passing through biblically named towns in what used to be a colony settled by PURITANS are astronomically high, the primary issue is that your gaze should be on the heavens.
Aside from the fact that American-centric prophecies are shaky at best and that Christ’s return is unknowable enough that thousands of people running around like chickens with their heads cut off is a good sign that this isn’t it, the primary issue is that your gaze…
Should be on the heavens.
Not on yourself.
